Art2Heart: the Beginning 14th May 2011

JCI Whitehorse Maroondah's new community project, Art2Heart, will commence its 1st session on Saturday the 28th of May 2011. To start the process, we had our "Meet and Greet the Volunteers" session today at the Jaycee Hall, Nunawading, VIC. The afternoon gathering was productive, and as always, the room was filled with energy and lots of laughter. We are simply a bunch of fun people.

JCIA 2011 AGM

Hosted by JCI Whitehorse Maroondah, JCI Australia’s 2011 AGM took place in Nunwading and Wheelers Hill from 8 to 10 April. It was our pleasure to have the Vice President, Katherine Cheng from America to be with us over the AGM weekend. The AGM weekend program features inspiring presentation from the world expert Prof John Reeder from Burnet Institute, Melbourne on the topic of malaria. Delegates were encouraged to know that JCI’s Nothing but Nets campaign is an effective tool in combating the problem of malaria. This was followed by a short official opening of JCI Whitehorse Maroondah’s local Nothing but Nets project by the VP,  Katherine Cheng and Chapter President, Suzi Chen.

Several trainers including Mark Lane, Shri Prasad and Natalie Viselli also conducted workshops on topics such as leadership, membership building, and market research over the weekend. Peter Reitano from the Whitehorse Maroondah chapter showcased his public speaking skills on AGM Sunday and will represent JCI Australia in the upcoming public speaking competition at the ASPEC in May.

Aside from the official duties and training, delegates enjoyed a feast when we visited Quanjude, a famous Chinese Pecking duck restaurant in the heart of Melbourne for the AGM dinner. Members also participated in a putting competition to raise money for the recent earthquake victims through the JCI Operation Hope. The Organising Committee is in the process of finalising our donations to both JCI’s Nothing but Nets and Operation Hope campaigns. Face of Monash Community Art Exhibition: Poverty & Hope

Extreme poverty and hunger is an issue that we often ignore in Australia. According to the World Bank, as of 2005, estimated 1.4 billion people earn less than USD$1.25 per day. To make things worse, these developing countries are often struck by preventable diseases such as malaria, an infectious disease, transmitted by mosquito bites. It is so prevalent that one child dies of malaria every 30 seconds and more than 1 million people die from malaria each year. Malaria accounts for USD$12 billion every year in health care costs and loss in productivity. The social impact of malaria is significant.

Proudly supported by the Monash City Council, JCI (Junior Chamber International) Whitehorse Maroondah is joining the United Nations Foundation to raise awareness across the globe about the dire situation. We are committed to work towards eradicating extreme poverty and malaria. Residents and communities from the Monash district are invited to explore these global issues through creative expression. The theme of this exhibition is Poverty and Hope.

Monash residents and communities are invited to enter their artwork for an art exhibition in the Highway Gallery, Mt Waverley in Nov 2011. All media will be considered. Selected entries may also be part of 2012 art book/calendar production.
